The Snug team being the fun loving crowd we are, recently decided to venture beyond the office walls and into the realm of the real world. Whilst in the real world we decided to take in the sights and sounds of Oxford and its Ashmolean Museum. After contemplating for a while the recent work of Rick Mather, we shifted our attention from architecture to our tummies and enjoyed a filling steak pie. All in all a joyful and refreshing office outing for the team.

‘Artchitecture’ Exhibition at ArtSway, Saturday 25th June

‘Artchitecture’ is a project developed by the Solent Centre for Architecture + Design in partnership with ArtSway. ‘Artchitecture’, is bringing together architects, artists and engineers to collaborate on exploring new models for rural architecture, through a series of temporary buildings in the New Forest National Park. The buildings will be a resource for interaction and debate on issues of sustainability, recycling, energy conservation and rural development, with artists’ inhabitation and activity as the catalyst.

Snug Projects led a team, including engineers, urban designers and members of the local public, at '24 Hrs to Save Winchester'. The event was an overnight design charette challenging teams to develop a vision for a more sustainable city. Three teams worked collaboratively to establish a creative and robust strategy, before demonstrating their application at two specific locations. The vision was then presented to the city at 12.00 noon on Saturday. Our core ideas included:

Guerrilla Tactics - small changes involving local people on a realisitc budget.

Walking within the walls - a strategy aimed at developing a walking culture.

Mobile Markets - promoting a more local diet under the banner 'watercress soup'. The strategy included evening markets at commuter hubs and mobile allotments.

Sub Hubs - densified to saturation at well located local centres that encourage self sufficient suburbs with a strong identity.

Boutique Business - aimed at promoting local working and the return of our 10,000 strong commuter workforce.

Tourist magnet - Our effort to redue the nations footprint by promoting Winchester as a UK 'city break' encouraging people to holiday at home.

Our core vision was to create small physical changes that encourage the all important transformation in behaviour that will underpin a sustainable future. We are looking forward to building on the success of the event in the coming weeks as we work with others to develop these ideas and ensure there is a lasting legacy. We are committed to being part of not only implementing physical changes to the city but also helping to stimulate the all importnat cultural transition that will underpin a more sustainable future for the city.

Cameroon Catalyst

Snug Projects is providing financial and practical support to Civil Engineering and Architecture students from Southampton University. the students are designing and constructing a community centre in Bambouti, Eastern Cameroon. Working with the local community they need to raise £50,000 over the next six months and are looking for sponsors to become part of this life-changing project. If you can help please give us a ring.

The proposed works will give the house a direct relationship with the garden which it does not currently enjoy and provide a fourth bedroom appropriate to the size of the house and needs of the family.

River Itchen Hits The tabloids...

Snug projects ongoing campaign to realise the full potential of the city of Southamptons relationship with the Itchen River has taken another step forward.Director Paul Bulkeley has been working with Southampton University Civil Engineering and Architecture students to develop urban design visions for the river. Their work was recently exhibited to Southampton City Councillors and Paul was interviewed for an extensive article in the Daily Echo Saturday Review, published on 30th January 2010. The article featured our revised vision for the council owned Depot site. We hope that this will continue to stimulate ongoing debate.

Paul's presentation, titled 'Getting people Itchen', explored the role of designers in the process of change with particular reference to designs power to provoke public engagement in the transformation of public space and initiate development.

Queens Park Soundscape

Paul Bulkeley has project managed a temporary transformation of Queens Park Southampton. The project was a joint venture between the University of Southampton and Southampton City Council, funded by SEEDA and the Solent Centre for Architecture and Design, exploring ways of transforming public space. An altered soundscape, derived from an analysis of the site, was introduced to the space and monitored. Initial results suggest the public's perception of the park were improved.

Paul Bulkeley was invited to speak at the RIBA South lecture series and set out the intellectual theory that underpins Snug Projects philosophy of design. The lecture was well attended and a range of questions stimulated an interesting discussion. Its always a good challenge to be able to set out what you stand for with only 48 hours notice!

The event is a professional development day for engineers, architects, planners and landscape architects supported by The Ove Arup Foundation and Royal Academy of Engineering. Paul will be speaking on the use of sketching as a design tool in higher education. Snug Projects is proud to announce that the project Hermitage has recently gained planning permission from Winchester City Council. The project in Twyford is for a new family dwelling in the setting of a listed house. The design is derived directly from the historic context and was developed following a thorough character analysis of the site. The house is comprised of a single storey open pavilion set against a two storey solid element with a strong relationship to the landscape.

Snug holds 5:100 Anniversary Exhibition

This November will be Snug's 5th Birthday, and to celebrate we are holding a exhibition in honour of our first 5 years and 100 projects.

For one day only, Snug's complete portfolio will be on display to the public. It's a great opportunity to come to see what we do, and talk to us about all stages of the design process. Stealth House goes to planning

We are pleased to announce that we have now submitted the 'Stealth House' for planning at Winchester City Council. The contemporary scheme is a replacement dwelling to provide a new family home in St Cross, Winchester. The design has developed from tight physical constraints where all of the available volume is efficiently used to create exciting spaces for modern living. The Stealth House has a continuous undulating eaves and sense of solidity and permanence that comes from the deep recessed windows punched into the brickwork. Internally the heart of the house is flooded with light from above and the living spaces enjoy a strong relationship with the garden.

The scheme is a lightweight timber framed, two storey extension, that provides a spacious new master bedroom with ensuite. We are pleased to announce that our extension at 76 Hatherley Road has been granted planning permission by Winchester City Council. The scheme was commended by the City of Winchester Trust saying "This is a well designed contemporary scheme that makes an interesting change to the usual rear extension". The extension provides a contemporary living environment in a traditional dwelling, improving the dwelling’s relationship with the garden. Aesthetically and organisationally the extension is distinct from the original dwelling.

The new visitor facility is designed to create a strong and recognisable brand for the new nature reserve. The visitor centre defines the ethos for the reserve as well as its physical heart. It is the point of departure for visitors wishing to explore the reserve as well as a key component in the way that experience is informed.

The core concept for the building is a dynamic interpretation of its main function as an interactive and contemporary portal into the environment. It is designed to give access to the reserves physical and philosophical values. The binocular is a powerful and easily recognisable symbol of this function. We have directly integrated this concept into the proposal, creating a powerful brand and dynamic visitor experience.

SOUTH-EAST COASTLINE 2200

Scientists predict that sea levels could rise as much as 5m by the year 2200. How will this affect the coastline of the South-East? The key urban areas at risk are Portsmouth, Bognor Regis, and to some extent Southampton. There is also a large amount of rural land and other smaller rural settlements. Is it therefore feasible to protect the coastline from the threat of flooding? This study proposes that this is the case, benefiting the area by an estimated £26 billion.

INSIDE THE BOX

The Urbanite Project called for creative solutions to the challenges of the 21st century office environment. Our response was to take on stress - the all too often defining trade mark of many office environments. Our solution is the BX. We created a place to wind down, clear your mind, stretch your legs, and think outside the box (from inside a box!) BX is a dynamic three dimensional team building puzzle. Flat pack planes combine to create disperate pieces of habitable furniture that combined create a continuous cube of secluded space - a continuous undulating and folded laberinth. Enter on one side, climb through - shout, sit, lie and listen before emerging ready to engage afresh in office life.

BX can be made at various scales, including a 750mm office module and a 450mm childrens version. The components are made from lightweight and robust cardboard honeycomb with a cork lining and velcro connections. Ultimately it is full scale interactive play. the inverse of stress.

Two of the final year students on the Civil Engineering with Architecture course, tutored by Snug Projects, were amongst the five finalists in the New Forest Tree House Competition. The competition was run by the Solent Centre for Architecture and Design.

HOUSE

Snug has entered two house designs for the RIBA HOUSE competition in Bradford. The strategy was to create an affordable two bedroom house that allowed a first time buyer to add value and sell on. The second was for the conversion of an existing victorian house into a 'home for life'. The designs pushed forward the terrace typology. Both proposals were described by an interview with the homeowner. We may be the only team entering the competition, as is was a particularly farcical example of an RIBA competition (see AJ 19.07.07, Letters, p20) so we may well win!

Lecturer of the Year

Snug Projects director Paul Bulkeley has been entered for the S.E.T Awards, Lecturer of the Year, for work undertaken with final year Civil Engineering with Architecture student, Criag Irvine. The work related to the design for a zero carbon out of town office building. The project involved a fully integrated solution to carbon neutrality. The Project demonstrates a viable, financially feasible, energy efficient, out-of-town office design. The design was proven to be carbon neutral, defined as a building where total carbon consumption is reduced and any remaining emissions are offset by renewable energy sources which produce carbon-free energy on site. An original graphical analysis tool, developed by the team, was used to compare the design to a generic design. The analysis produces what has been termed as the Greenprint of the building. A visual representation that uniquely emphasises a buildings increased positive impact.

KILOMETRE TOWER

The Kilometer Tower was just that, 1km high. The design was our entry to the international 06 Skyscraper competion. The project was developed in conjunction with students at the University of Southampton. What makes the building unique is its inverted structural solution. Five 'Gerkin' size pods are suspended in tension from the ETFE clad exo-skeleton. This creates intrinsic and integrated structural, environmental and spatial benefits. It is also a unique approach to skyscraper design - as far as we know!

BRICK India 07

This month we have been leading a team of eleven students from the University of Southampton on a three week charity project to India. The project involves the construction of a leprosy village in the South Indian town of Dharmapuri. We are now in the process of masterplaning the next village and preparing a design for the new community centre. It has been a privilege to work with the students and alongside our Indian colleagues.
